Retailers: Growing retailer interest in recycling at Solihull Show
CRUK’s exhibit at the 2012 National Buying Group Flooring Show in May generated evidence that retailer interest in recycling waste carpet is growing due to consumer demand.
Project Co-ordinator Jane Gardner described the response from retailers over the two days as “very positive”. She went on to explain; “with more than 50 enquiries, many of the retailers we spoke to were keen to enhance their offering to consumers by providing a take back service for recycling carpets.” According to Jane, several reported increasing questions from customers about carpet sustainability and recycling options.
Although recycling outlets for carpet installation waste are increasing, they aren’t currently accessible to retailers everywhere with most currently available in Yorkshire and the North West as historical bases of fibre reprocessing. Jane says “retailers in these areas should contact CRUK to find out how they can recycle their installation off-cuts. Consumers generally want to see their waste carpet put to better use and this is an added positive selling point.”
