Carpet Recycling UK meets with DEFRA
Carpet Recycling UK met with DEFRA representatives last month in the early stages of reviewing the case for restricting textile waste to landfill. As a flooring textile, carpet is included in the scope of a textile restriction, which follows a commitment made in the 2011 Government Waste Review to consider the case for restrictions on sending wood, textiles and biodegradable waste to landfill.
Discussions already held with the Wood Recycling Association and wood recyclers provided DEFRA with insight into the issues and challenges facing the wood industry, and as they start to consider textiles, DEFRA were keen to hear from CRUK.
October’s meeting allowed CRUK to highlight achievements to date and the producer responsibility stance being taken by the network’s manufacturing members. CRUK will continue the dialogue with DEFRA in the coming year as they review the case.
