New initiative to tackle carpet waste and homelessness in Doncaster
Carpet Recycling UK member Made by U is an innovative new social business aiming to reuse and recycle carpet whilst helping to support homeless people in Doncaster. The project, whose premises (pictured) opened in August, is a partnership between Doncaster-based homelessness charity, the M25 Housing and Support Group and local carpet supplier Neil Greens Carpets and Flooring of Edenthorpe. All profits will be reinvested in provision of local homelessness services.
Made by U will collect and reuse uplifted carpets to provide affordable carpeting to social housing tenants. Where unsuitable for reuse, carpet will be recycled into sustainable underlay products or otherwise used in production of eco-fuel pellets. This zero-waste-to-landfill initiative will provide employment and training for up to 100 people affected by homelessness, including job opportunities in driving, carpet cleaning and fitting and underlay manufacturing.
Made By U Project Director Neil Green commented: "Having developed the project with M25 and forged relations with environmentally conscious partners around the country, I cannot wait to see this project unfold." For further information, please call 01302 361777.
